An eighties portrait needs more than a warm filter. The haircut, shoulder line, setting and way the light hits the face should tell the same story. Start with a clear reference, describe one coherent look, and check the person before judging the nostalgia.
This guide explains using prompts in ChatGPT and, separately, creating a portrait in our studio. The photographs shown here were generated in 1980s Photo Studio using GPT Image through OpenRouter, with fictional adult references. They are not screenshots or test results from the ChatGPT website.
Build the whole eighties look
Hair sets the silhouette. Teased roots, feathered layers and rounded curls should remain visible even when the portrait is small. Leave space above the head and beside the cheeks. For short hair, ask for a lifted crown and fuller sides rather than automatically adding long curls.
Clothes give the hair a setting. A padded shoulder, roomy acid-wash jacket or gathered satin sleeve helps the transformation read as a period portrait. Choose a single outfit direction instead of combining a prom dress, sportswear and a business suit in one request.
Photography finishes the picture. A studio backdrop and direct portrait flash suit a posed sitting. A casual home scene works better with a snapshot composition. Subtle grain can finish either image, but it cannot replace the hair and clothes.
Prepare your reference photo
Use a photo of an adult whose face is clear, evenly lit and not covered by a hand, sunglasses or another person. A neutral, current photograph makes it easier to compare the result with the original. Avoid heavy filters and screenshots of small profile pictures.
You do not need to be wearing vintage clothing in the input. The prompt asks for a change of styling while preserving recognizable facial structure and natural skin tone. Upload only images you own or have permission to use, and check the service's privacy terms before sharing a reference.
For our studio, each file must be JPG, PNG or WebP, no larger than 10 MB or 25 megapixels. These are our studio's limits, not ChatGPT upload specifications.
Choose and copy one complete prompt
Big Hair Studio is a useful starting point when you want the hairstyle to be the most visible change. The prompt below is the same version used by this site's style configuration. It deliberately changes hair and clothing; facial likeness can vary.

Transform the reference into a bold, unmistakably 1986 salon-glamour studio photograph. Make the hairstyle the dominant transformation: dramatically teased roots, a high full crown, and abundant defined S-shaped perm waves and springy curls expanding around the temples and sides. For shoulder-length or longer hair, build a broad, rounded cloud of layered curls that extends well beyond the cheeks toward the shoulders; for shorter hair, use a tall, full-bodied feathered quiff and curled sides. Keep the face unobstructed. This must read as big eighties hair at thumbnail size, not a smooth modern blowout or merely a lifted side part. Use a vivid fuchsia satin blouse with pronounced padded shoulders, gathered sleeves and large geometric earrings, or a broad-shouldered jewel-tone jacket and open-collar shirt suited to the reference presentation. Use a muted rose studio backdrop, direct portrait flash with gentle fill, warm saturated color-negative film and subtle print grain. Compose a waist-up portrait with generous room around the full hair silhouette. Preserve the recognizable facial structure, natural skin tone, ethnicity, adult age and number of referenced people. Deliberately restyle hair and clothing while preserving identity; adapt the curls to the original length and texture without forcing long hair onto short-haired subjects. Retain natural pores and believable anatomy. Exclude modern phones, contemporary logos, flat modern hair, plastic skin, heavy beauty retouching, text and watermarks.

Attach your photo in ChatGPT
Open ChatGPT and use a conversation that supports image generation. Attach your reference photo, paste the prompt and ask for the transformation. Review the account's current availability and limits; your studio subscription does not provide ChatGPT credits.
OpenAI's Images in ChatGPT guide explains uploading an existing image and describing edits. It also covers follow-up changes and saving the result. This guidance was checked on September 12, 2026. Interface controls and account limits may change, so this tutorial does not depend on a particular button position or promise a fixed free allowance.
Wait for the image to finish before submitting another version. A submitted request is not a guarantee that the final photograph will match every detail of the prompt.
Check the face, then refine the styling
Compare the output with the original before downloading it. Check the eyes, nose, jawline and natural skin tone. Then inspect hair edges, hands, earrings, teeth and clothing seams. A convincing background does not compensate for a face that no longer feels familiar.
If the change is too subtle, make one specific correction:
Increase the volume at the crown and temples, with defined eighties curls. Keep the face unobstructed and preserve the person's recognizable features and natural skin tone.
If the styling feels inconsistent:
Keep the studio backdrop and portrait flash. Use one broad-shouldered satin outfit and remove modern logos or accessories. Keep the hair and clothing consistent with the same eighties look.
If the person looks different:
Recheck the original reference for the eyes, nose and jaw shape. Preserve the adult's recognizable facial structure without smoothing away natural skin texture.
These are revision suggestions, not verified before-and-after claims. Change one issue at a time and compare again. If the input is blurry or obstructed, a clearer reference may help more than a longer prompt. No wording guarantees an exact likeness.
Create the look in our studio instead
You can also use the home-page studio without moving a prompt between services. Select a photo locally, choose a look and review the displayed credit cost. Sign in and confirm when you are ready to upload and generate.
One new portrait uses 4 credits. A confirmed failure returns the reserved credits once.
Create this look in our studioOur studio uses GPT Image through OpenRouter. It is an independent service, not an official ChatGPT product. Its results, controls and billing are separate from ChatGPT. Pricing lists the current subscriptions; Help explains task recovery, credits and privacy.
Make a portrait for two
In our studio, choose The two of us. Upload either one photo with both adults clearly visible or two separate references labeled A and B. Do not put a group photo into each reference slot. Similar sharpness and lighting make it easier to assess both identities in the result.
The couple photo guide includes two verified A/B examples and complete couple prompts. Check each person's face separately, including whether features have accidentally blended. The studio supports two adults, not multi-person family composites.
Save the result and keep your original
For ChatGPT, open the finished image and use its save control, following the official image guide. Check the downloaded file before removing anything from your account.
For our studio, open My Photos to download an existing result without another generation charge. Results are available for seven days unless deleted earlier; private reference copies are kept for up to 24 hours. Download the picture you want to keep before it expires, and keep your original photo separately.
Common questions
Why does my result look like a modern photo with a filter?
Make the hair silhouette and outfit more specific. “Retro, warm, film grain” leaves the core styling open. Describe feathered layers or defined curls, a period shoulder shape and one photographic setting.
Can I choose a different hairstyle?
Yes. Select another base prompt or describe a specific edit. Our styles intentionally change the hair, adapting the volume to the reference's length and texture. They do not promise to keep your current haircut unchanged.
Is copying the prompt free?
Yes. Our prompt collection is readable and copyable without an account. Generating in this studio uses credits; generating in ChatGPT is governed by your ChatGPT account. The two services do not share a balance.
Can I guarantee that my face will not change?
No. Reference instructions aim to retain identity, but AI likeness varies. Use a clear reference and inspect the result before sharing it.
